Documentary and Panel Discussion

“God on the Brain”

From BBC Horizon (2003)

Rudi Affolter and Gwen Tighe have both experienced strong religious visions. He is an atheist; she a Christian. He thought he had died; she thought she had given birth to Jesus. Both have temporal lobe epilepsy.

Like other forms of epilepsy, the condition causes fitting but it is also associated with religious hallucinations. Research into why people like Rudi and Gwen saw what they did has opened up a whole field of brain science: neurotheology.

The connection between the temporal lobes of the brain and religious feeling has led one Canadian scientist to try stimulating them.  80% of Dr Michael Persinger’s experimental subjects report that an artificial magnetic field focused on those brain areas gives them a feeling of ‘not being alone’. Some of them describe it as a religious sensation.

“…a high probability [Ellen White] had temporal lobe epilepsy” says Prof Gregory Holmes, Dartmouth Medical School. His work raises the prospect that we are programmed to believe in god, that faith is a mental ability humans have developed or been given. And temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) could help unlock the mystery.

What side are you on, science or spiritualism? Be prepared to defend your position.

The documentary will be shown followed by a discussion. Is Illumination, cosmic consciousness, Kundalini and various religious sensations a spiritual manifestation, or is it simply the neurological manifestation of the brain? If there are volunteers from the audience, a panel will be selected for a debate and Q & A. Please prepare for a lively debate.

Anomaly Archives Meetup this Saturday

Join us at the First Anomaly Archives Meetup of 2010 this Saturday at the Austin History Center from 3-4pm.(See end of email for venue details)

Sponsoring this meetup and venue is the local Austin Mufon chapter headed by Anomaly Archives board member Mike DeGroff.

The monthly Austin Mufon meeting is 1-4pm the first Saturday of most months.

As this is our first official “MeetUp” we’ll be answering questions about the organization, its mission, projects and goals, etc.

We may watch a video or two, talk about books we’re reading, and generally talking about a wide variety of anomalous subjects.

We’ll also be giving away a couple of books to some lucky attendees. Kind of like a door prize. Details at the meeting.

Also, after the meeting, if there’s enough interest, perhaps we can retire to some comfortable outdoor eatery for “conversations over saucers” with coffee, tea, beer, etc.

Finally, we’re pleased to announce that the Anomaly Archives will be hosting British Fortean Cryptozoologist Jonathan Downes the afternoon of Saturday, March 20th. Details to follow shortly.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you all at the Austin History Center this Saturday.

More witchcraft hysteria

So…  I guess I really have to admit that the Thursday blog has turned into an Every-Other-Friday blog as of late. I had a good friend who used to say “a bad excuse is better than no excuse.” Right now, though, my only excuse is “I’ve been crazy busy and preoccupied.”

Lame, I know. But an excuse, nonetheless.

So for this edition of the links of the week I only bring you one; a story of widows in the Indian state of Jharkhand beaten, dragged through the streets, and forced to eat human excrement for being “witches”. The grand irony, of course, is that “spirits” supposedly possessed other women in the village, alerting them to the practice of witchcraft in their midst. But this somehow isn’t considered a form of sorcery or witchcraft in and of itself.

It’s very odd, the way the human animal does these things. It strikes me as especially odd considering a conversation that I was having last night with an online gaming friend. An ethnic Hmong, he comes from a very different background, spiritually, than the charismatic Pentecostal Christian family I was raised in. But despite these differences, we were able to find a great deal of spiritual common ground when the conversation turned in that direction.

It was refreshing, in that way that only spirited conversation can be, to see that there was still some spark of that youthful hope I once held that all problems could be solved if we only spent enough time talking, seeking common ground, and truly trying to understand one another. Of course, now that I’m old and cynical, I know that that is not usually the case. These recent, and many older, incidents of violence against witches (or Jews, or Christians, or Buddhists, or Sunni, or Shiite, or adherents of the Baha’i faith, or “insert group of your choice”) prove that. But it was as nice to have that small spark reignited as it was repugnant to watch the video of these women being degraded.

Humanity has an immense capacity for both love and hate, cruelty and kindness. Which will you choose in your day-to-day?

Austin IONS Presents Mary Mansfield

MaryMansfieldSeeking the Balance: my dance between spirituality and science – Mary Mansfield

Austin IONS Meeting – October 27th, 2009: Mary Mansfield, contemplative psychologist, will present on Seeking the Balance: my dance between spirituality and science.  Drawing from her own life experiences, she will share how she sought ways of creating a balance between her spiritual and physical worlds, especially in times of trials and tribulations.  In the gallery of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4600 Grover, south of 49th east of Burnet. the meeting is free and open to the public, at 6:30 PM for gathering, meeting at 7 PM.

For more information go to IONSaustin.org, and call 512-847-0371.

Mary Mansfield has lived many incarnations, coming to the realization that life gives you what you need, from the many realms of existence, in order grow and move forward.  Austin Texas “called” in 2003, and she moved from Boulder, Co, She currently works as the Executive Assistant to the Dean’s Office, College of natural Sciences, UT Austin.  Her love of wine has brought her to tasting of and writing for the Texas Food and wine Foundation’s publication, Plate and Vine.

And, Mary Mansfield’s first words where “ What’s that?” Her questions became deeper and by the age of 12, she began questioning her religious background in Catholicism. A synchronistic meeting with a family friend would steer Mary into the direction of Mythology, Eastern Philosophy, Astrology, Numerology, and The Power of Positive Thinking. After a near death experience, with the birth of her first son at 17, her thirst for spiritual knowledge deepened. She studied Mind Psi-Genics and Transcendental Meditation, which was her first introductions of the mind, body and spirit connections, and throughout 1970’s Mary acquired much of her knowledge reading the limited number of books available in her fields of interest. During this time she also began her 30-plus years of dream journaling and interest in symbolism.

Manly Hall, artist-scholar-philosopher of mythical symbolism said:

“Love rules the sphere of the wise. Those who have learned to love life in its deepest and most mystical senses have escaped from bondage of fear and dwell in peace with all things.”

I found out about this video on 10/13 at a friend’s 33rd birthday celebration at Julio’s Cafe in Austin.  While eating dinner another friend mentioned this video and she said Freeman is in it and that part of it was filmed at her house.  Turns out the video was uploaded onto YouTube on 10/13.  Kinda weird.  I’m a big fan of Freeman and I just thought I’d let y’all knwo about these synchronicities!

Video of the Week – UFO Hypotheses: Alex Collier Volume One

Anomaly TeleVision » Blog Archive » UFO Hypotheses – Alex Collier Volume One

In the third DVD of the “UFO Hypotheses” series, Andromedan contactee Alex Collier describes his face-to-face contacts with blue-skinned human ETs from the Andromeda constellation and the Andromeda galaxy, which have included multiple visits aboard their tremendous motherships and decades of telepathic contact. In this truly incredible interview, Mr. Collier describes how the contacts began, and then goes into great detail describing the Andromedan civilization and their Council to which the Pleiadian ETs appealed for assistance in dealing with a dangerous, malevolent ET confederation plaguing humanity and much of the galaxy. Mr. Collier goes on to explain the details of the “Earth dilemna” and describes in detail the members of this malevolent ET confederation consisting of reptilian ETs from Alpha Draconis, the Orion Group, and the grey ETs from Zeta Reticuli 2. Mr. Collier does not hold anything back in demonstrating how the Alpha Draconan reptilian ETs have manipulated humanity into a nearly invisble system of servitude for aeons, feeding off of our labor and our bodies through the wars that they instigate and the hostile belief systems which they foster in the form of religious and social instituions.

Boy, ain't that a scary looking bunch of soldiers. Wolverines!!!

OMGZ! Have you heard that Obama is fashioning himself a private Army, made up of Americorps volunteers? It’s true! And who hasn’t gazed upon the average gaggle of Americorps volunteers, fresh and clueless from college, and thought to themselves: “From this raw material, I could surely fashion a brutal cadre of fearsome shock troops that will finally bring Western civilization to its knees!” — Jason Linkins @ the Huffington Post

If you haven’t guessed yet, yup… it’s more insan-o-tainment from Glenn Beck.
