African Witch Stories
Some of my favorite news stories come out of sub-Saharan Africa. When looking at African newspapers (or news sites in our modern digital world) it isn’t uncommon to see a story on the development of environmentally friendly technology solutions like solar powered laptops and cooking stoves that run on recycled paper pellets sharing space with reports of monsters, witches, and hexes. Recently I saw this report of a mysterious beast tormenting the goats of Namibians living in Onheleiwa and Oikango villages. While reminiscent of the chupacabras in their preferred choice of prey, whatever is attacking the Namibian kraals has a taste for more than blood. While some animals have been found with only the soft, internal organs eaten, in other cases all that remained of the goats were hooves, heads, and … Read entire article »

John A. Keel Has Died By Loren Coleman July 6th, 2009 John Alva Keel, 79, a friend, Fortean, fierce fighter for his theories, professionally a writer and journalist, has died. A fellow admirer of Mothman and the anomalies all around us, such as the name game, is gone. Keel, who lived most of his life in New York City, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2009, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, after some months in a nursing home near his Upper West Side apartment. Repub-Logan’s Run
The latest paranoia drenched half-truth to emerge in an apparent GOP race to the bottom is a doozy. A guest on former Senator Fred Thompson’s radio show, Betsy McCaughey, stirs up the scare factor by claiming that on page 425 of the massive HR 3200 is a provision requiring seniors to go through “mandatory” counseling that encourages them to end their life or demonstrate why they should be allowed to live every five years. Curious as to what in the world could be misinterpreted in such a way, I looked up the resolution, scrolled down to page 425, then back up a page to 424, where content begins so that I could get a greater scope of context. Read out of context, the content still seems fairly benign (for example, counseling … Read entire article »

Ufologist Richard Hall has died
Richard H. Hall (December 25, 1930 – July 17, 2009) On Friday I learned of the death of UFOlogist Richard Hall by way of an email sent from Jerome Clark through the UFO UpDates eList: I have just received word that veteran ufologist Richard Hall, who was both a friend and hero to me, died this morning of the cancer he had been fighting. Ufology has lost a giant. Jerry Clark ufoupdateslist.com/2009/jul/m17-001.shtml Richard Hall was a very significant researcher and historic advocate for rational and scientific investigation of the UFO phenomenon. He was rather unflinchingly anti-paranormal and rejected the works of two of my favorite UFO researchers, Jacques Vallee and John Keel. Falling on the heels of John Keel’s passing and the tributes to his work and falling within the slew of other “celebrity” deaths of late Hall’s passing perhaps signals … Read entire article »

Lunch Menu Review – Shoal Creek Saloon’s Chicken Fried Steak Monday Special
Mind Meld With Miles… Over Migas! Back in the day… when I was fresh out of high-school and working at Austin’s downtown public library, my boss had a party for me. To promote the little day-job shindig she’d created a flyer with a picture of Star Trek’s Jean Luc Picard all Borged-out with the caption, “Mind Meld with Miles.” This was of course a gentle ribbing at my being such a brainy SciFi kind of guy, being into UFOs and whatnot. I still find her meme-melding of Vulcan mind-transference with cyBorgian assimilation to be rather cute, bridging the gap between Original and Next Generation Treks. Over the years that mnemonic has stayed in my mind and I’ve saved that old flyer. (I know it’s around here somewhere) The phrase has rattled … Read entire article »

Signs of the Econopocalypse part 1
In Latvia, folks desperate to pay their rent and other mounting costs aren’t quite selling their souls, yet; but they are mortgaging them according to a story from Reuters. (My apologies as well. I meant to post this yesterday, but work got kind of busy. I hope no one got too bored without their Thursday fix and sold their soul on a whim.) … Read entire article »

Thursday is Blob day
Oh, the wonders of the internet! You never know what you might find, how far it might travel, and who might lay claim to it. Recently a video has been making the rounds that shows some sort of blob-like, pulsating masses living in a sewer pipe. Whatever they are, they appear to be animal (although slime molds have not been completely ruled out yet) and despite their ability to move, they seem to be attached to the wall of the sewer pipes by some sort of mucous or film. In some portions of the recording you can see this mucillagenous layer floating in the water beneath the bulk of the mass. Early speculation at the Cryptoworld website ranged from bryozoan to freshwater jellyfish to tubifex worms. Although tubifex worms sometimes clump, … Read entire article »

Introducing Brian Worsham and The Anomaly Television Video-of-the-Week
ANOMALY Magazine Welcome’s Brian Worsham! In late 2001, some friends and I were talking about our desire to see more and better quality paranormal and parapolitical TV shows on broadcast and cable television. We wanted our own Anomaly TV Network. We felt certain we had the drive, the skills, the equipment and the network of real world anomaly researchers that would be just the trick to make such dreams a reality. But things are seldom so simple as that. Within a few years we recognized that the face of the internet was rapidly changing and that services such as YouTube, which had arrived on the scene earlier that year, were about to further revolutionize information sharing and content delivery on the internet. It took over a year for this paradigm shift to … Read entire article »
