Secrecy and Skepticism
Today we feature another guest article, from a skeptical slant, by Oliver Hallen. While it’s no secret that I am in no way a proponent of the Extra Terrestrial Hypothesis (ETH), I do believe in the reality of the phenomenon. Whether it eventually proves to be more physical, more psychological, or something altogether unimaginable (supposing it is, or ever can be, proven) it is real to those individuals experiencing it. The sociology and psychology student in me is honestly more interested in why people interpret the phenomenon the way they do than the physical reality of those phenomenon. But laying back a day enabled me to hear this little gem on NPR about Conde Nast publications advising GQ not to run a story by Scott Anderson in their Russian version of the magazine. The subject of Anderson’s article? Vladmir Putin’s Dark Rise to Power. Putin’s rise from Prime Minister to President was based on his reactions to a series of “terrorist” bombings by Chechen separatists groups in 1999 that, some sources indicate, may have been orchestrated by some of Putin’s old KGB contacts. The latest paranoia drenched half-truth to emerge in an apparent GOP race to the bottom is a doozy. A guest on former Senator Fred Thompson’s radio show, Betsy McCaughey, stirs up the scare factor by claiming that on page 425 of the massive HR 3200 is a provision requiring seniors to go through “mandatory” counseling that encourages them to end their life or demonstrate why they should be allowed to live every five years. Curious as to what in the world could be misinterpreted in such a way, I looked up the resolution, scrolled down to page 425, then back up a page to 424, where content begins so that I could get a greater scope of context. So, we missed the “because it’s Thursday” feature last week. Sorry about that. I had a whole thing on weird law enforcement planned, but I read Mack’s articles on the tasering of grandmothers and thought to myself “this is too serious an issue to dilute with frivolous arrest stories.” But this week we’re back, and leading off with the neatest free, educational game I’ve seen in a while; Wolf Quest. A chicken in every NOT!
(a “because its Thursday” special) So, Oprah Winfrey recently ended her “21 day vegan challenge” and decided to cap it all off by buying everyone chicken from KFC. I’m not even going to point out the obvious “WTF?” factor in this action. I’m not vegan by a long shot. As a dedicated omnivore, I’ve no intention of giving up my cheese or the occasional hamburger. But my girlfriend is a vegan chef, and a very talented one at that (food photos here, NOM NOM), and so eating vegan at most of my meals is not only NOT a big deal, I frankly don’t “miss” anything. Raelian’s Israeli “orgy for world peace” cancelled
I found this item about those crazy Raelians on Huffington Post thanks to Chez Pazienza over at Deus Ex Malcontent. For those not familiar with the Raelians, they are a saucer cult founded by French race car test-driver turned spiritual guru Claude Vorilhon. The Raelian ideology is the standard ancient astronaut world seeding theory, with heaping dollops of late 60s and early 70s free love, and generically spiritual “war is bad” platitudes.
