Big Brother Will Keep You Safe

by Mack White Police Chief Acevedo wants to keep you safe. He wants it more than he has ever wanted anything. Why, he stays up late worrying about your safety. He walks the floor at night, he loses sleep, he frets, he wrings his hands, he cries bitter tears, so great is his concern. For you are his pet, his darling one, his treasure, and he wants so badly to keep you safe. And now, at last, he has come up with a plan. In his nocturnal pacing and fretting, and crying, and rending of garments, and gnashing of teeth, he has come up with a plan to keep you safe. It is a foolproof plan, a fine plan, a noble plan, a grand plan that will (cue the drum roll, sound … Read entire article »

Guided By Voices

by SMiles Lewis “Do you ever think about … murder? About committing the ultimate crime?” - Says the Voice in Your Head, Thanks to Court TV. (WABC) It’s only a matter of time. The wrong person will find their way, like a deer trapped in headlights, into the path of a HOLOSONIC ™ advertising beam. Whether the voices tell them to “Drink more coke” or “tune in next week” they will snap. God bless and keep safe those who fall in their path thereafter. We’ll either get another mass shooter, mind control cult leader, or perhaps another President. What has long been rumored within the conspiracy and ufology communities went public a few years ago (though a variant of the technology was discussed for use even earlier during the Waco siege) and is quickly … Read entire article »

Austin police chief proposes Big Brother camera system

By Thom White CITIZINEmag.com AUSTIN January 23, 2008 – On Tuesday, recently-appointed Austin police chief Art Acevedo announced to the media a proposed police surveillance camera system that would attempt to record all public activity in the Sixth Street district in order to reduce the likelihood of crime. The cameras’ recordings would be reviewed in secret by police personnel who would use the footage as evidence in prosecutions against individuals they identify committing crimes on video. Chief Acevedo said if there is no public opposition to the installation of the public spy cameras, the equipment will be installed and begin recording around 6th Street in a few months. According to news reports, Chief Acevedo told reporters, “As I travel around the city, I have been approached by residents in high-crime areas who are … Read entire article »

Killing of burglars in Pasadena stirs controversy

By Thom White CITIZINEmag.com On the afternoon of November 14, 2007, computer consultant Joe Horn, 61, shot and killed two men that had burglarized his neighbor’s home in Pasadena, Texas, near Houston. When Mr. Horn looked out the window at two o’clock in the afternoon and saw a couple men breaking into his neighbor’s home in broad daylight, he first called 911. When he saw the thieves then come out of the house with a bag of loot, and still no squad cars had arrived, he went outside with his shotgun to confront the men himself. During his 911 call, Joe Horn identified the two burglars as “black,” and when the news story was first blasted across the airwaves, it was portrayed as another episode in Americans’ ongoing “black/white conflict.” However, in today’s … Read entire article »

Wal-Mart Opponents Hold Town Hall Meeting

By Thom White CITIZINEmag.com AUSTIN, Tex. January 12, 2008 — Opponents of the Wal-Mart Supercenter that is planned for Northcross Mall gathered together yesterday at St. Louis Catholic Church for a town hall meeting. Responsible Growth for Northcross (RG4N) leaders proposed their next steps after a recent court ruling effectively gave the developer, Lincoln Property Company, a green light to begin construction of the giant retail store. According to a December 21, 2007, report by the television station News 8 Austin, “District Court Judge Orlinda Naranjo ruled that the site plan in question complied with ordinances and that it did not require public hearings.” Responsible Growth for Northcross leaders remarked in a written statement that, “In December, the 200th Judicial District Court of Travis County issued its ruling on our lawsuit. RG4N is disappointed … Read entire article »

Scientific Dogma

In the medieval era most parishioners did not speak Latin. Mass, however, was delivered in Latin (sometimes, undoubtedly, by illiterate priests who were simply reciting by rote). In the highly organized structure of the Catholic Church the fact that the laity could not understand Latin did not matter. It was not their lot to truly understand, but to accept on faith. There were priests to act as intermediaries in absolving their sins. There were Bishops and Cardinals whose jobs were to pour over esoteric texts and pages filled with strange symbols and letters, to unravel and understand the workings of God’s Universe and to dole out that knowledge in spoonfuls and dollops as they saw fit. Jump forward thirteen centuries and although the players have changed, the game has stayed pretty … Read entire article »

Austin is a stronghold for Ron Paul campaign

The AAS covers this past weekend’s phenomenal Ron Paul “money bomb” and Tea Party ’07 activism. But of course the author just had to use the obligatory, dismissive identifiers “‘black helicopter’ crowd” and “Paul’s is the Keep Austin Weird campaign” to discredit his supporters. - sMiles POLITICS 2008 PRESIDENTIAL RACE Austin is a stronghold for Ron Paul campaign Supporters run the gamut from techies to libertarians to ‘black helicopter’ crowd. By Mark Lisheron AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Sunday, December 16, 2007 Famously, flagrantly liberal Austin has almost overnight become a crucial redoubt in a campaign to elect as president a libertarian Republican congressman from Lake Jackson. The strength of Ron Paul here is just another surprise in a campaign built almost entirely on the unexpected, delighting the candidate and confounding the experts. From the bursts of online political donations — nearly … Read entire article »

Greg Bishop on the Anniversary of the Silver Bridge Collapse

My good friend Greg Bishop has reminded us that Saturday was the 40th anniversary of the tragic bridge collapse in Point Pleasant which was the climax to a flap of strange phenomena reported on by fortean ufologists John Keel and Gray Barker. Which also means its the anniversary of the birth of Mothman. UFOs & The Black Lodge – A Blue Rose Report Primer

“We shall pick up an existence by its frogs. Wise men have tried other ways. They have tried to understand our state of being, by grasping at its stars, or its arts, or its economics. But, if there is an underlying oneness of all things, it does not matter where we begin, whether with stars, or laws of supply and demand, or frogs, or Napoleon Bonaparte. One measures a circle, beginning anywhere.” ~Charles Fort, Lo! UFOlogists don’t like to talk about bigfoot. Cryptozoologists looking for sasquatch don’t like talking about ghosts. Ghost hunters won’t talk about UFOs. And conspiracy researchers are constantly lamenting, and rightfully so, being linked to all of the above by the media as a discrediting tactic. It’s a fair criticism (for those not wishing to taint there … Read entire article »

A year for Fortean anniversaries

The year 2007 has been a banner anniversary year for Forteans in general and ufologist in particular. Those with even a passing interest in unexplained phenomenon know that 2007 marks the 60th anniversary of the June 24, 1947 Kenneth Arnold sighting that ushered in the modern era of UFO sightings and gave popular birth to the term flying saucer, as well as the 60th anniversary of the purported late June or early July crash in Roswell, New Mexico (reports of the exact crash date vary and the story would remain buried until Stanton Friedman, a physicist with experience working on various government air and spacecraft projects, began investigating the Roswell rumors in 1978). … Read entire article »

Mack White Comments: THE CRAP

I’ve read about various disagreeable things Glenn Beck has said on his CNN program, but had never seen a clip from the program—did not even know what the man looked like—until last week when Dave vonKleist came to Austin to screen his documentary 9/11 Ripple Effect. The documentary features an excerpt from the edition of Beck’s show on which Dave was a guest. It was included in the documentary as an example of how the mainstream media never seriously addresses the issues raised by 9/11 researchers, but rather, attempts to discredit the research by associating it with UFOs, tinfoil hats, Bigfoot, ghosts, and the Second Coming of Elvis. And there he was in the clip, Glenn Beck, doing just that, heaping ridicule on his guest, Dave vonKleist, without once asking a … Read entire article »

Liberty Dollars Seized by FBI Agents

Feds grab over 50,000 collectible “Ron Paul Dollars” in raid November 21, 2007 – Last week federal agents invaded the headquarters of Norfed, manufacturer of collectible “Liberty Dollars,” and confiscated all of the company’s precious metals, computers, and documents. FBI officials in charge of an investigation have refused to publicly discuss the raid that has effectively shut down the “National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve Act and the Internal Revenue Code.” Norfed manufactures collector currency, “Liberty Dollars,” which contain precious metals such as gold and silver. On their website, Norfed offers instructions on how to use the silver medallions in everyday transactions as a “private voluntary barter currency.” About a year ago, the U.S. Mint issued an internet “warning” about Norfed’s “Liberty Dollars,” indicating that prosecutors within the … Read entire article »

Local Businesses Band Together to Stop Domain Subsidies

AUSTIN November 14, 2007 — Over a hundred Austin business owners have joined the community group, Stop Domain Subsidies, which is pushing to reverse the city of Austin’s multi-million dollar tax giveaway to Simon Property Group, current owner of the ‘mixed-use’ development, The Domain. Petitioners contend that massive tax rebates granted to Simon Properties give the corporation an unfair advantage over local retail businesses. If the petition drive is successful, Austin residents will vote as soon as May 2008 on an amendment to the city charter that would prohibit tax subsidies for retail businesses. … Read entire article »
